This is the first report of the transformation of B. ubtilis using particle bombardment of submicrometer old particles. The technique offers a means for testing ransformation of recalcitrant bacteria when transformaion has not been possible through other means. Comared to electroporation, the efficiency of transformation sing ballistic technology with 0.3-mm gold particles is till low. However, when a high transformation efficiency s not required, as long as transformed bacterial cells are btained, the method presents a promising alternative. ecause the polyol-manufacturing process is capable of roducing even smaller particles, of various elemental ompositions, the potential for transformation of even maller prokaryotes may be possible, and may lead to the ransformation of species which are resistant to current ransformation procedures.
